14 Fantastic Self Care Ideas

I was talking to a group of mum friends in the school playground the other day and it became apparent that although we all have very different lives, the one thing we have in comment (apart from the kids) is that we are all busy, constantly. We all spend our days fulfilling our obligations with regard to employment, our homes and our families and tend to neglect our own self care.

We got to discussing how it’s so easy keeping up with everyone else’s needs that we regularly let ourselves fall to the bottom of the pile. Unfortunately when this happens it can lead to resentment of others and ultimately has a knock on effect to the rest of the family.

After I got home I began thinking about what we, as busy mums, can do to help restore the balance. Small acts of self care that we can squeeze in, even when life gets manic, and so my list was born.

Having a list that I can easily reference means I can just get started when I have a spare 10 minutes.

But I don’t have a spare 10 minutes, I hear you cry! I thought the same too and one thing I did was disable the social media notifications on my phone and move the icons from my home page. These two small actions made a huge difference. It meant that I no longer get caught up aimlessly scrolling through my e-mails and social media feeds because I was drawn in by a notification. Do you know what, I haven’t missed anything important and I’m also more productive when I do go on social media.

So, we’ve found ourselves a spare 10 minutes, but what are we going to do with it. Well that all depends on what you want to do, but here’s a selection of my list, which is stored in my bullet journal and on my phone so I can access it whenever I feel the need. Feel free to use this as a basis for your own list where you can add activities that bring your joy.

Self Care Ideas

  1. Cuddle with the kidsOne of my favourite things ever is spending 10 minutes snuggling up with the kids.
Sometimes we read a book together, other times we may watch a cartoon and on a rare occasion we sit together just cuddling.
  2. Dancing with the kidsAnother fun thing to do is stick on some cheesy music and get dancing. At the minute our favourite tunes to get moving to are Shake a Tail Feather and All The Single Ladies.
  3. Listen to some of your favourite musicMusic can instantly change your mood which is why I have playlists for everything from relaxing to cleaning. I also have couple of 10 minute playlists perfect for when time is short.
One is full of chill out tunes for when I want to kick back and relax, the other full of uplifting and motivational songs, perfect for dancing to.
  4. Get yourself a drink and read a chapter of a book. This is one of my favourite things to do when I’m on my own.
In winter I curl up with a cup of tea or hot chocolate in my little reading nook. In the summer I take my reading outside with a lovely glass of fruit infused water or a fruit tea. If you want to see what I’ve been reading, head on over here for more information.
  5. Do a brain dump/mind sweepSometimes relaxing is impossible because of everything swimming around in my head. In these circumstances I find it beneficial to spend 10 minutes conducting a mind sweep and getting it all down on paper.
  6. Light a candle/wax burnerI love candles and find the flickering extremely calming. However it’s not always practical to have candles burning, especially with small children. That’s where my wax melts/burner are perfect; I can stick my favourite scents on and not have to worry about the flames.
Most of my melts are from Geekette Creations on Facebook. My current favourites for self care are Magic Night and Dreamscape. You can find out more here.
  7. Get outsideUnfortunately I live in a city so getting outside with nature isn’t all that easy. However I have found that even something as simple as walking around the garden or stroking the rabbits can help lift my mood
  8. MeditateI use an app on my phone called Headspace which is fab. You can choose you meditation duration and then just sit back and follow the instructions. I don’t do this as often as I’d like at the minute.
  9. Declutter/OrganiseThere’s just something calming about a tidy drawer or an organised bookcase. This is why I often find myself decluttering or organising when I have a spare 10 minutes.
  10. Do something creativeThis is another thing I love doing, although I regularly find that 10 minutes just isn’t enough. However when I do feel the urge to be creative I love colouring or decorating my planner. You can check out some of my creations and planner spreads here.
  11. Pop to the Coffee ShopAlthough I’m not a big coffee lover, sometimes I like to treat myself to one of the seasonal drinks (Gingerbread Latte anyone) from the coffee shop (and maybe a cake every now and again too).
I usually get my drink to take away but it still feels like I’ve taken time just for me.
  12. Paint my NailsI love nail varnish and have loads to choose from so one of my little treats is to paint my nails. If I’m feeling slightly more indulgent, I will treat myself to a new nail polish.
  13. Body Brush/MoisturiseMy facial skincare routine is reasonably good, however I seem to be lacking when it comes to my whole body. Body brushing is proven to boost circulation so is a fantastic way to spend 10 minutes that will have long lasting results.
Plus if you also have the to moisturise you’ve got an added bonus, plus you will smell gorgeous.
  14. Buy some flowersThis may seem a little self indulgent but I love having fresh flowers around the house. I will often pop a bunch in my basket as I’m perusing the supermarket shelves.

So there we have a selection of items from my self care list.  I try to fit in at least one idea every other day and I definitely feel happier and more relaxed.

Do you have your own list? If so, what’s on you list?
If you don’t have one, why not create your own by focusing on the things that make happy.
