Flying with Children: 5 Activities to Entertain on the Plane

Flying with Children: 5 Activities to Entertain on the PlaneTHIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS

When it comes to holidays abroad, one of the biggest fears for many parents is the journey/travelling. The ‘joys’ of flying with children, especially young ones, is enough to keep even the calmest of parents up at night. But fear not, having just returned from our own holiday with our 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son I am able to share my wisdom. Here are some of the activities that worked for us to keep the monsters entertained during our 2 hour flight.

I would add they we did also have with us some electronic devices but they didn’t get used on the outward journey.

1. Crayola Color Wonder Packs

I love these packs. There are so many to choose from and you can even get addition pens if you need more colours. They are completely mess free and only work on Color Wonder paper meaning they are perfect for the plane.

2.  Window Gels/Stickers

This was an idea I found on Pinterest last year which the kids loved. We did the same again this year. One problem with these is that they aren’t very robust. So if, like mine, your kids are a little bit heavy handed they will only last for one holiday. Fortunately you can pick them up quite cheaply if you aren’t too bothered about what you get. The pound shops sell them as part of their seasonal decorations so keep a look out at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

I have since found Stuck On Stories. These are books with board story books with characters that can be stuck on the pages. The are also fab for sticking on windows. We already have a Batman set which was a birthday gift for Corey, but will probably look at getting another one for Anya for next year.

3.  Reading Books

My kids love reading so they always take a couple of books each for the flight. We usually take a well loved favourite book plus a new to them book so there is an element of surprise.

4.  Aquadoodle/Magnetic Drawing Pad

I love it when the kids can be creative, however our normal activities can be messy. Not ideal on a plane with other people.

Cue the Aquadoodle and magnetic drawing tablets. Both can be used mess free (are you noticing a pattern) while travelling but have multiple uses.

5.  Sticker Books/Magazines

If you have children that are prone to sticking their stickers everywhere but where they should go, then maybe this idea isn’t for you. However I found having a sticker book with a story filled at least one of our 20 minute slots quite easily.

Alternatively you could let you kids pick a magazine in the airport.

These are just some of the ideas we have incorporated when flying with children. I’d love to hear yours, just pop your ideas in a comment.

Happy travels

The pen’s don’t last too long on the travel one’s but they are still great for holidays.
